RACE AGAINST TIME - Building a Culture of Mine Safety

Book Recommendation:

Race Against Time - Building a Culture of Mine Safety

By Gregory M. Anderson & Stephen R. Rosene

Available in English and Spanish.

Step-by-step how to reduce incidents and injuries by building a behavior-based culture where individual take personal responsibility for safety.

FORMAT:
A fictional story of a manager in a mining organization plagued with fatalities and injuries who is given 120 days to create a culture of safety.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Executive teams responsible for building a strong culture of safety throughout their mining organization.  This book assists leaders in recognizing safety will only become a core value when they move it from their heads to their hears.

Supervisory personnel whose success depends on their ability to create an environment where their teams are motivated to want to work safely.

Everyone who wants to understand how behavior impacts their safety and, more importantly, wants specific tools to reduce the likelihood of becoming involved in an incident.

AUTHOR'S VISION:
One only has to look at tomorrow's headlines to know the time is right for Race Against Time.  According to the United Nations' International Labor Organization, more than two million lives are lost each year in job-related accidents and illnesses.  Another 268 million lost-time accidents occur globally.

Mining organizations around the world recognize they must reduce the amount of money lost as a result of on-the-job incidents in order to remain competitive.  What's more, a myriad of technological failures and slow governmental response to catastrophes, necessitate individuals take greater responsibility for their own safety, as well as those people around them.

TESTIMONIALS:
"No one person knows everything they need to know to work safely, but that collective knowledge can be found within the stories of any crew of miners.  Race Against Time is a tool for developing safety as a core value and promoting the interaction necessary to ensure that each person makes it home safely at the end of a shift.  A good story, like Race Against Time, is more effective than a dozen safety statistics."
Mark Bernadet - General Manager of Operational Performance, Elk Valley Coal Corporation.

"Race Against Time is a seminal literary work that boldly gets to the core of our mining industry's safety and health issues: the human factor.  The authors have written a thought-provoking book that - if understood and, more importantly, implemented - will result in not only significant safety but also operational improvement for our industry."
Dale Ekmark - Senior Advisor, Kazakymys PLC.

"I offer my admiration to the authors for deciding to write about this important issue with simplicity - but yet heartfelt conviction and passion - so more of our friends, co-workers, family members and those that work in the mining industry come home safely to their loved ones."
Jesus Figueroa - President, Consilium Solutions LLC.

"Workplace safety is a top priority for most mining companies; however, getting employee buy-in is often difficult because of the culture that has been created.  The authors of Race Against Time recognize that to change this culture there must be 'belief in' safety, from the mine dry to the boardroom."
Steve Kral - Editor, Mining Engineering Magazine, Tunneling and Underground Construction Magazine, Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Explorations, Inc.

"During my 27 years in the Safety, Health and Environment profession I have dedicated myself to ensuring safety and accident prevention is focused in the hearts and minds of the people doing the work and those most at risk.  Race Against Time creates a vivid, compelling and believable story that will serve as the catalyst for improving your safety performance and building a culture of safety for your organization.  People at all levels of your company will connect with this powerful story."
Mark Wescoat - Directory Safety and Health, Washington Group International DOE Idaho National Laboratories.
