Sustainable Fishing….Wild Capture for the Future and Beyond…
There is a global crisis among fish stocks around the world. Seventy-five percent of commercial marine fish stocks are currently fully fished, over-exploited, depleted, or recovering at a slow rate. When fisheries collapse, or suffer severe cutback, not only is the stability of the marine ecosystem threatened, but local and national economies also suffer.
Moody Marine is ideally placed to assist with sustainable accredited certification from Marine Stewardship Council, (MSC). The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international, not for profit, non-governmental organisation established to promote sustainable fisheries and responsible fishing practices worldwide. Products that carry the MSC environmental label, highlights good practice and leaves consumers feeling confident that they are not contributing to the problem of over fishing.
By making the MSC logo a mandatory requirement, most North European retailers (UK / Scandinavian / European), Wal-Mart, (USA) and major fish processors (Unilever, Youngs Bluecrest etc) have contributed to the greater awareness of this certification scheme.
Moody Marine is the leading fishery certifier with the MSC on a world wide basis and is the only organisation that can also offer the MSC’s Chain of Custody (CoC). This system provides formal evidence that sustainable wild capture is used throughout the processing chain so that the MSC logo can be applied to the packaging of the final product sold to the consumer.
Responsible Fishing Scheme (RFS)
While MSC assessments operate at the level of a whole fishery (often a whole country), RFS operates for single vessels.
Developed in UK by Seafish Industry Authority, along with Moody Marine, the scheme is now reaching a wider application. As Moody Marine are the only organisation who can offer this service we are currently receiving enquires from Indian Ocean tuna fisheries and fishers in Norway and Iceland which sell into UK.
